What to do when front tooth breaks due to fall

Preserve your broken tooth

Broken Tooth Due to a fall? Dentist guidance on steps to follow and preserve that teeth

As a practicing dentist, I have treated many cases at my clinic where teeth gets broken or chipped off due to a fall while playing, cycling etc.

One of common questions of patient is - can broken tooth be restored? The short answer is yes - if and only if patient visits dental clinic in time with fragmented part of tooth preserved.

Case Study 1

A 16 year old boy visited our Dental Clinic in Noida with pain, bleeding and lacerated lips. The boy has fallen down while playing football which had hurt his teeth and lips badly.
Clinical examination revealed a fractured front tooth which was tender. Given it was front tooth, the boy was anxious about his smile. The incident happened 20 mins back and the boy's brother had the fractured part of tooth with them from the incident spot.
As the first step, it was important to calm the patient down that he will get his smile back.
In such cases where we had the fractured part of tooth and incident happened in last few minutes, the fragmented part can be bonded to the fractured part of the tooth with cosmetic resin materials which are available in different shades to imitate the natural smile.

Case Study 2

A man in his 40s called our Dental Clinic in Noida after a small accident of slipping in bathroom which led to injury in front part of mouth with lacerated wounds on chin, lips and front tooth was completely avulsed out of the socket with bleeding.
The man was advised to bring the tooth in saliva or milk and reach the clinic within 20 mins. Patient was able to reach the clinic in time and teeth was transplanted back in the same socket.

Steps to follow when you break your front tooth

1. Preserve the fragmented tooth in either milk or saliva.
2. Reach your nearest dentist within half an hour.

If you reach in time and fragmented tooth is well preserved, your Dentist may be able to preserve your broken tooth.
